I have fallen in love with Briar burls. It happened on my holiday a while ago. Normally I use wood reclaimed from near my shop. But this football-sized tubers are harvested at the age of 30 to 60 years in Africa. The wood is light brown to reddish brown, often beautifully figured and very hard. And therefor a challenge but also very rewarding to turn on my lathe.
The burls from my new supplier are uncooked and therefor there are a lot of cracks in the wood. That offers a perfect opportunity to create a spectacular piece of art. When I create a new piece I first start to thoroughly examine the wood for the possible designs. I decide how to mount it on my lathe and then start turning. The wood is leading me to the best possible shape.
I had this exceptional large burl. Normally the burls are not big and smooth enough to create a piece with a natural edge. But this one was so large that I love to try to create one with a natural edge this time. I inlayed all the voids and cracks with Belgian Blackstone, Calcite, white minerals and gold. On top I have put a matching piece of Cerussite on Barite. A perfect tribute to the life of someone who loved nature.
The base of the lid and the ring in the opening are made of Rosewood.
The urn is sanded up to 800 grid, so it almost feels soft and therefor very pleasant to hold in your hands. It is finished with high gloss lacquer. You can clean it with a damp or dry cloth.

This urn can hold all of the ashes of an adult in almost all cases.
